From Tradition to Technology: The Paving Process Behind the Mukilteo Ferry Terminal

As a paving contractor, we understand that the success of any project goes beyond just laying down asphalt or concrete—it’s about respecting the environment, the community, and the cultural significance of the land. The Mukilteo Multimodal Ferry Terminal is a prime example of how infrastructure can blend functionality with deep respect for the history and culture of the area it serves.

Respecting Sacred Land

The construction of the Mukilteo Multimodal Ferry Terminal involved a deep collaboration between LMN Architects and the Coast Salish tribes, whose ancestral land holds thousands of years of cultural significance. For us, as contractors working in such sensitive environments, this underscores the importance of careful planning and execution. The site’s rich history as a tribal fishing and ceremonial ground meant that every move we made had to be deliberate and considerate. During the construction, no excavation was permitted near the historic midden to avoid disturbing ancient artifacts or burial sites, which is a principle we hold dearly when working on projects with cultural and historical significance.

Sustainable Paving Practices

One of the most impactful aspects of the terminal’s design was its commitment to sustainability. The toxic creosote-treated piles from the World War II fuel depot and pier were removed to prevent further pollution of the waters. As paving experts, we know that using modern, environmentally friendly materials and methods is key to protecting our natural resources. For instance, the use of permeable concrete in the vehicle holding areas ensures that rainwater is naturally filtered before it reaches the Possession Sound, maintaining the ecosystem’s balance and protecting the fish populations that are vital to the Coast Salish tribes.

Permeable Paving for Stormwater Management

The project’s use of permeable paving is particularly noteworthy. Permeable concrete allows rainwater to filter through the pavement and into the ground, reducing runoff and helping to manage stormwater naturally. This is a crucial technique we use in projects where water management is critical, particularly in areas like the Puget Sound where protecting marine life is a priority. Proper stormwater management not only reduces environmental impact but also prolongs the life of the pavement by preventing water damage.

Balancing Tradition with Modern Techniques

In addition to using sustainable paving materials, the terminal’s design was influenced by traditional Coast Salish longhouses. While the structure itself is supported by modern composite steel and timber columns, the incorporation of Douglas fir for structural members and Western Red Cedar for cladding pays homage to the indigenous building techniques. As paving contractors, we understand the importance of integrating modern technology with traditional design principles to create spaces that honor the past while serving the needs of the present.

Commitment to Quality and Craftsmanship

Projects like the Mukilteo Multimodal Ferry Terminal remind us of the importance of quality and craftsmanship. Every material chosen, every surface laid, and every detail completed has an impact—not just on the project but on the community that will use and interact with it for generations to come. For us, the success of this project wasn’t just in its functionality but in the way it became a symbol of collaboration, respect, and sustainability.

A Project to be Proud of

At the heart of this project is the idea that infrastructure can be both functional and respectful of the environment and the culture surrounding it. As paving contractors, we take pride in our role in helping bring such visions to life, ensuring that the roads, parking lots, and permeable surfaces we install not only meet today’s needs but also reflect a commitment to the future. Whether through sustainable practices or culturally conscious design, we strive to build projects that make a positive impact on the land and communities they serve.
